Troubleshooting Browser Extensions

This document applies to: Coworking & Workplace

Browser Extensions are plugins that you can add to your browser to give you extra functionality. Things like password managers, ad blockers and more can add extensions to your browser, and you may not even be aware of it.

Most of the time this doesn't cause any issues, but occasionally they can interfere with websites in unexpected ways. The only way to know if a browser extension is the cause of an issue is to disable them and then try the affected process again. This guide will help you do that.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. The first thing to do is disable all browser extensions (you may want to make a note of which extensions are enabled first). Follow the instructions for your browser.
    1. Safari
    2. Google Chrome
    3. Firefox
    4. Microsoft Edge
  2. After extensions are disabled, refresh the page you had an issue with and try again
  3. If this does not resolve the issue, you can re-enable all extensions and skip the rest of these steps
  4. If your issue is resolved, start to re-enable extensions one-by-one until the problem occurs again
  5. Once you find the offending extension you can turn it off while safely re-enabling the rest

Let us know the results of this troubleshooting. If an extension is causing a problem, we will investigate to see if we can find a way to increase compatibility or reach out to the extension developer to see if they can fix any bugs that may be present in their code.

Where to Manage Extensions

Safari

Open Safari. In your menubar, open the Safari menu and select Settings. Click on the Extensions tab and use the checkboxes to the left of each extension.

Google Chrome

Select More > More tools > Extensions. Turn off the extension you want to disable.

Firefox

Click the menu button. Click Add-ons and themes and select Extensions. The Add-ons Manager will open in a new tab where you can disable extensions.

Microsoft Edge

Click the menu icon (the three dots) in the top right-hand corner of the browser window. Click on Extensions. Select the plugin to be disabled, then click on the gear icon next to it. Toggle the switch to turn off the plugin or browser extension.
